This page describes what this site (elifulkerson.com and elifulkerson.com) records about visitors, why, how long it is kept, and who sees it.

Server logs

The web server writes an access log for this site. Each entry holds:

• your IP address
• the date and time
• the address of the page or file you requested, including anything after a ? in it (for example, the words typed into the search page)
• the HTTP status code and the size of the response
• the referring page, if your browser sends one
• your browser's User-Agent string

There is also an error log, which can contain your IP address and the address you requested.

The logs are used to run and protect the site. A program (fail2ban) reads them and blocks, for 24 hours, addresses that make requests no ordinary visitor makes, such as probing for .asp pages.

The logs rotate daily and seven are kept, so entries are deleted within seven days. They are not shared and not combined with other data.

The download server (download.elifulkerson.com) keeps its own access and error logs in the same way. It does not load the ads described below.

Advertising

Most pages show a Google AdSense ad above the footer. The home page, the contact page and the portfolio page do not.

On pages with the ad, your browser loads a script from pagead2.googlesyndication.com. Google then receives your IP address, your User-Agent, and the address of the page, and can set and read its own cookies. Google describes what it does with this at How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

Google, and other advertising companies that Google works with, use cookies to choose ads based on your earlier visits to this site and to other sites. You can turn off ads personalised in this way: for Google, in Google's My Ad Center; for other participating companies, at aboutads.info or, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu.

Fonts and other outside requests

Every page loads the Inter font from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com). Google receives your IP address, your User-Agent and the address of the page making the request.

A few pages make other outside requests:

• The search page uses Google Custom Search. It loads scripts from www.google.com, and the words you search for are sent to Google.
• The tcping page has a "Buy me a coffee" button. It loads a font from Google Fonts and an image from www.buymeacoffee.com.
• A saved copy of a Wikipedia article under /personal/ loads stylesheets from wikimedia.org.

Links to other sites (PayPal, GitHub, LinkedIn and so on) send nothing until you follow them.

Cookies, forms and accounts

This site's own code sets no cookies. There are no accounts, no comments and no forms that store what you enter; the only form is the search box described above.
